The Dance of the Black Deer

Description

Deep in high mountain cliffs where no man treads, you will find black deer bounding through snow. They have glistening white eyes and hooves to match. They never stop their beautiful dance for a second. They never eat, they never sleep. They continue on an unbroken path to nowhere. One however does not follow this norm. For deep in the rock formations sleeps a little black deer. Little black deer does not care for the others’ journey. He does not leap nor bound. He runs and plays and sleeps when he is tired. But every once and awhile his small ears catch the fragile sound of a flake of snow drifting in the wind. Little black deer’s ears will jump up and his fascination peaks. He rises from his sleep and curiously watches the flake fall before his face. However, a gust of brisk wind suddenly takes the flake away from his sight. Little black deer cannot let it escape and runs after it. He watches the flake as he weaves his way out of the rocks and into the open cliff sides. The wind becomes his mistress and carries him further and further away from his safe haven. His deep focus on the flake causes the grooves of trampled snow to pass his thoughts. Little black deer happily jumps after the flake through the deep unknown trenches in the snow. The wind then lets the flake go and it joins the mass of white below little black deer’s hooves. His tail drops when he realizes his adventure has finished. As little black deer starts to turn, a new sound breaks into his ears. A tromping sound. A great and powerful thunder of hooves from over the hill. And like a searing waterfall, large black deer break the snow. They leap and bound in large numbers straight towards little black deer. They grow closer and closer and soon they are upon him. Little black deer attempts to move out of their way, but there are too many deer for him to even sidestep. They leap all around him, some coming close to landing their sharp hooves right onto him. None of them see him; they are all focused on their destination. Little black deer has no choice but to run with the current of deer to avoid being smashed. He does not prance like the rest, he simply runs. The tromping of hooves envelops him tightly and he cannot think straight. He doesn’t know where he is going, he cannot see due to all of the snow flying. He continues to dodge death from the other deer by some stroke of a miracle. Little black deer can only think that this will end soon. They will turn or stop and he can go back to his rocks. Much to his surprise, it ceases in a way no one suspected. Little black deer starts seeing the deer before him disappear below the snow. It is only once he is closer does he see they are not disappearing into the snow. They are flinging their entire bodies off an extremely high cliff to suicide. Little black deer slides to a halt right at the edge and watches in horror as each and every deer gracefully falls to their death. They dive into fog and are never seen again. One by one, hundreds of deer fly over his head into the fog. They are all silent. All eyes are wide open. They look unfazed, not accepting death and not afraid of it either. Little black deer cannot stand this sight anymore and shuts his eyes until the sound of deer passing over his head stops. He stands and just as he turns around he sees one more deer leaping chaotically towards him. This large deer slams into little black deer and the two both fly off the cliff together. The large deer falls with grace but little black deer screams and moves about wildly in the wind until he is sucked into the fog. He then falls silent.

Little black deer is no more.

I was listening to holiday music in the car when one of the three versions they play of Carol of the Bells came on and I just got this image of these thin black deer leaping though the snow. I kept thinking about it and I just really liked the concept. The more I heard Carol of the Bells, the more I began to craft this story about the black deer as I worked on this. So I hope you enjoy my sad little story about black deer.
